We celebrated the decade our Teacher of the Year began teaching last week. Thus, an entertaining day! First graders asked, "What's the 80s?" My brief explanation included side pony tails, neon colors, leg warmers, and bangle bracelets. For boys...well, I was stumped. Either way, I had a great time dressing up and decided to go with a more "Dynasty" kind of look than "Flashdance". :o)

Seriously though, first graders, what a riot!

Every. Single. Day. Without. Fail. When coming in from recess, there are a minimum of 2 tattles. Usually more... either way, here is a rundown from today:

Kid in high-pitched super whiney voice: "He put my coat in POOOOOOP!"
Me in a calm non-yelling voice: "He what? I'm sorry that happened. Are you sure he did it on purpose?"
Again with the super whiney: "Yeeeesssss! He put it in POOOOP!"

By the time we get inside, the story has been told by at least 4 different children and the adult who was on duty. And then...the real comedy gold begins.

I call the darlings over who are involved and talk calmly.
"I've had several reports from students you put her coat in poop. I'd like to give you a chance to explain. What happened?"
"Well, I saw her coat in the trashcan and I took it out. And then"
"NU-UH! He put my coat in poop and then he put it on his wiener"
(looking appalled...) "I DID NOT DO THAT! I DID NOT PUT YOUR COAT ON MY WIENER. I did put it on poop. I'm sorry."

During this exchange, it was quite difficult to maintain my professional demeanor. I had to cover my face to keep from busting a gut. Ah, the life of a first grade teacher. I wish you could have seen the dramatic facial expressions and heard the exceedingly emphatic twang about "pooooop".

And now, Ways to know your teacher loves you:
If you buy her a medium shirt from Abercrombie & Fitch for Christmas and she is wracking her brain trying to figure out how to wear it and not look like a giganto pink puffle. She probably thinks you're great, especially if she's lucky to fit an extra large from Abercrombie & Fitch. Does A&F actually even make XLs? I think they might be "size-ists".

Oooooh! I am so excited! My momma and I are going to go thrifting on Saturday. I am so fortunate because I have a momma who is my friend.

I've been having so much fun all week taking pictures and uploading them to chictopia.

Precious husband took a picture of me for my chictopia page. I sure love that guy!

Today, school had it's ups and downs but I will say this, dadgummit, those kids are learning how to read and THAT makes me happy! It's the best part of teaching and why I love my job.

There was a good turnout of parents at the Awards Assembly too and that always makes my heart smile and makes my nerves act up. Being in front of that many people makes me a tad nerve-y.

I've never encountered a person who gets as jazzied up as I do. My Joe explained it best when he said, "I feel like if I can adequately explain it, people will be as excited as I am about it." Does it ever get done?! Even with a vacation full of planning, creating, making, designing, is it possible to say, yep, I'm done? I feel so overwhelmed. Sometimes, I wish I could leave it all there and truly be done. I don't feel creative. I don't feel like it's possible. Even if I throw myself into it wholeheartedly, it never gets done. 9-4? Not on your life. More like 8:00-7:30 and on weekends. I chose this.... better buckle down and get started. Only 12 more hours until I am there again... and I haven't even started tonight's load. How can someone even have a family with all this?!

I read fashion blogs often. Mmmm...let's say daily. I feel weird sometimes because I like clothes so much. I feel like the only way to get out how I feel about it is writing a blog. I feel like I'm a minority in my circle of friends. Not that it's a bad thing... Sometimes my husband talks about music the same way I talk about clothes.... it's hard to get all the emotion about it out because it feels like I'm just talking and people think I'm crazy. because everytime they do... I feel like they know. They know what it's like to get excitd over an accessory. They know what it's like to not be rich. They know what it's like to value a dollar. They know how I feel. I tell Joe all the time, "Man, if I met that girl, we'd have so much fun together and we'd be immediate best friends."

But, when I read fashion blogs, sometimes I day dream... I dream about what it'd be like to have a wall full of shoes. I dream about having the perfect pair of skinny jeans and not feeling bad about the cost. I dream about my next thrift store junket...

But for now... I'm a realista-fashionista-teacherista :o)

Model Shoot? Or... DL Photo Day?

Who really likes taking their pictures for their driver's license? Let's be honest, if a police officer is looking at your id, odds are you are not going to be cute or happy. Dang it.

Last time I renewed my license I went after school. Annnnndddd.... we'd just been on a field trip. I though I still looked put together but after the photo was printed, I see how the lady at the DMV failed to tell me my hair was messed up. Thanks, awesome lady. Thanks.

Hooray! Good news! I got married! Hooray! Good news! I get a new driver's license photo! SCORE! When I got up today, I said, "Shoot. I be takin' a photo today. I be lookin' fly. Lemme get this hurr curled pretty. I gotta make sure my makeup be lookin' right."

When all was said and done... husband man told me I looked very pretty and said, "Get your camera!". That man is made for me. <3

I'm a big weirdo and I love it! Be yourself!

Today, when the lady called me to pick up my new, winning license she called for "Mrs. Coatney". That makes my face and heart smile.

Sat-ur-day in July... hearts

We met to make cranes today. You see, it's part of her bucket list to learn how. Thankfully, I could help with that. These cranes are going to be taken to a children's hospital because, to my friend, they represent hope. And in asian cultures, it's believed if you make 1,000 you get a wish granted. If anything, it's gonna make a kid smile...and that make me smile. I'm proud of my friend.

Vision Vanity

I was all jazzied up about getting contacts today. Thank you, Santa Claus! I haven't worn contacts since I was 16 so it's been a while.

My new optometrist was very pleasant. He knows my older siblings and I am near his son's age, so hooray for small-town business and service. We go through the whole "Which is better, 1 or 2? 3 or 4? etc.", "What do you hear from your brother these days? small talk, small talk, small talk..."

Then, I get the news: "Well, it looks like we're going to have to go with a bifocal to correct your esophoria and your current perscription is a little too strong."

Esophoria is characterised by inward deviation of the eye usually due to extra-ocular muscle imbalance.

BIFOCALS?!?! Awwww dang, that sucks! Don't "old people" wear bifocals???

Me and "old Barbie" now have something in common: stupid bifocals. Bet she needs 'em too.

Vision insurance, I hate you too. You and your stupid bifocals can kick rocks and pee up a rope. You are not my friend. Yes, although you save me money, I still don't have contacts, which I NEED because I take dance and my glasses fling off when turning. So, sweet Helen, who works at the optometrists' office, all the $$$ you figured still makes me cranky. Sweet Helen, it's not your fault glasses and contacts, even with insurance, still cost far more than the amount Santa generously left under my tree. Actually, you cost nearly three times, THREE TIMES!!! 3 Xs!!!! as much!!!! I. hate. you.

I had a nuclear meltdown classic Jana style. Which means, I waited until I got in the car. Got down the road a ways and was on the phone crying with Honey. Honey patiently listened to me overexaggerate in every way possible. Honey, you deserve a medal. You see me when I'm the worst. You see me the way no one else does. Here's a small glimpse of what Honey got to endure:

[all said through tears, sobbing, and the most pitiful whining you've ever heard... I didn't edit anything out really. I'm putting my embarassing tantrum out there for you to enjoy and laugh.]
"I hate my eyes. They're stupid. Stupid pretty blue. I'm blind. I just want you to tell me it's stupid. It's not funny!!!! (he wasn't laughing at all) I can't see. I hate the eye doctor. I never want to go see them again. I'll neverrrr have contaaaaacts. I wanted to wear contacts in our wedddddinggggg! Stupid blind esophoria. I HAVE TO WEAR BIFOCALS like an old ladyyyyyy. It costs too much moneyyyyy! I hate my stupid eyes. They're so dumb and blue. They're blind!!!"

In hindsight, after reading this, I WAS being ridiculously melodramatic. I'll go back in a month or so, when I have more money and buy contacts. It will be fine and I will survive. Yes, I'm 27 and I will be wearing bifocals soon. Please try not to make too much fun of me. My vanity is really winning out here.

-Student:"Why are you wearing a skirt over your pants?" Miss Groenewold:"Because it's see through and if I didn't have on pants under it you could see my legs and that'd be gross". Student: *quizzical look on face and walks on*

11/17/2010 - Wednesday's outfit:
- "Ilikeyourshirt! Ilikeyourvestyshirthingy! Ilikeyourclothes! You dress like a model!!!"

-"You look like you skinned a polar bear."

-"You look like an eskimo."

Curvy like a dowel rod. Wait. What?!

I've been viewing the designer collections for Spring 2011 on Vogue's website. As visually stimulating as they are, I can't help but think, "These models are shaped like dowel rods."

Designers, I know it's challenging for you to be perpetually creative. How 'bout ya'll challenge yourselves to designing for REAL people. Let's try something a real live person would wear. Mkay? It's easier to make clothing for stick people. Plus, I bet if those models got to eat some pizza or a bread roll from Logan's they wouldn't have a scowl on their face like they do now. I've thought that for a long time.

"Gah, I wish I could have some bread from Logan's."

I am never going to be long and skinny. I will never stand taller than my 5'4". So, help a sistah out... make something I'd wear for real. Put a gal who looks like me on the runway. Pretty please?

I went to the Vintage Tulsa Show this weekend with my dad and I found some treasures. I really liked the way this outfit turned out....so, I'm sharing. :o) Plus, I'm wearing my affectionately nicknamed "Nanny McPhee" shoes. I got them for $15 and I simply love them. I told a friend tonight, I don't expect anyone close to my age to appreciate them but I've been looking for a pair of shoes similar to these for years and they're next to impossible to find in my size.... so YAY!

Bobby pins are your friend!

I have a little tub of bobby pins I use all the time. I LOVE THEM! Bobby pins are great because they are inexpensive and versatile.

Okay, I love ponytails. I wear ponytails often. It's quick, it's easy, and it keeps the hair out of my face. Just one problem, I always feel like I'm being a bit of a bum if I do just a ponytail. So, here's where the bobby pins come in handy.

Okay...
1. Part your hair on the side. (My hair is always parted on my right side. I tend to favor side parts for some reason)

2. Take a small bit of hair from the bigger side of your part and begin twisting back away from you face.

3. Continue until you think you should stop. You can carry it back to the nape of your neck if you want. For this style, I didn't do that.

4. Secure the end with several bobby pins. When I secured my hair, I alternated directions of the bobby pins to make it firmly secure.If you twisted farther down the side of your head, you may need to put bobby pins along the way so it doesn't come unraveled. I have really thick hair so I always use a lot of bobby pins.

5. Once you have your twist secure and are pleased with it you can put a hair tie in for your ponytail. My hair's not quite long enough to do it yet, but I think this would look really polished if I made it a bun instead of a ponytial. Today, I just did the flip through.

How I see it...

I have a hard time summing up what works for certain body types. So what I'm going to do is break things up into pieces.

Kudos to Jess for embracing her curves! This dress has the potential to be cute and ultra flattering. Here's what needs to happen:

1) The black sash around the middle cuts her torso in half. If the sash were moved down to her waist it would elongate her torso. With her petite 5'3" frame, where it sits now, it makes her look stumpy

2) The length of the skirt needs to be shortened a few inches. Perhaps to her knee or just a bit above it. Because it's length is so far down her calf, it makes her legs look shorter. This all goes back to her having a petite frame....

3) Lastly, this doesn't bother me as much but it's something to consider:
the oval/bubble print fabric makes her large bust appear more roundy/busty. Kinda like, BAM! So perhaps a solid would minimize her bust.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I basically just said to get her a completely different dress, but perhaps now you can see something you may not have seen before? I don't know....

YESSSS! Okay, honestly, I don't know anyone who can afford $10,000 on a wedding dress...but the point of this quote is people don't have to pay designer prices to get designer looks, which makes me super happy! Thanks to places like Forever 21, Target, and online markets, high fashion is affordable to every day buyers. Plus, I notice the above quote comes from a couture designer. *gasp*

So for my friends I hear saying, "I can't afford fashion".... well, there's probably an alternative somewhere waiting in the wings. Best of luck and as always...

Taming the monster in the closet...

February. Valentine's. Spring is just around the corner and that means spring cleaning. Ugh. Confession: I am the WORST when it comes to cleaning. Seriously. If I tell you how bad I truly am... well, it's embarassing but that's not the point of this blog. We are going to tackle the 'skeletons' in our closets together. :o)

I realize it's easy to become emotionally attached to clothing. I'm the first to admit I have too many clothes. So, I'm going to use a hodge-podge of what's helped me clean my closet and what the 'experts' say on purging your closet. I figure when the closet is purged and organized, it'll be easier to create outfits.

6 questions to ask:

•Have I worn this within the last 12 months?
•Does it fit me now?
- By the time you're thin enough to wear the article of clothing again, will it still be in style?
•Do I feel good when I wear it?
- This is about confidence. Are you your most confident you when you wear it?
•Do I look good when I wear it?
- I think this goes hand in hand with being comfortable. If you're comfortable and it looks good (both are important!) then keep it.
•Am I comfortable in it?
- If you are readjusting the sleeves, tugging to make it longer, or pulling the pants from your rear, you're probably not comfortable. I can honestly say, when I'm uncomfortable, I get cranky, stressed, and cry. Sounds dramatic, I know, but it's true.
•Does it hold any special sentimental connection for me?

If the answer is "no" it has to go!

Last thing: Are you keeping the piece of clothing because you feel proper alteration will make it wearable once again? Beyond a missing button or a simple hem, the clothing would be best altered by a professional. Before dashing off to the tailor, do the math in terms of time and money. If it's still worth it, then get it altered ay-sap. If not, it has to go.

You know yourself better than anyone, I have to have a friend with me for "emotional support" when cleaning out my closet. Plus, a brutally honest friend can say, "Jana, girl, snakeskin has been out for years. Do NOT keep that skirt!". [true story]

Okay, my very LAST tip is all me. There is a difference between vintage and old clothes. This is going to sound a bit harsh... but I realized my ten-year-reunion is next summer. EEK! Unfortunately, unless it's a "wardrobe basic"**, clothes from high school, unless sentimental, may need to be reconsidered. It's always up to you. I'm always an advocate of being yourself so if these items reflect your personal style hold on to it.

So, let's get those closets purged because one they are, we're going to donate clothes and we're going to learn how to use what have to create great things.

Grammy's - not just for your Grandma. ha!

Okay - so maybe this is fashion - my FAVORITE performances/artists of the night were Lady Gaga and Pink. You may ask, "What do the Grammy's have to do with fashion?" or maybe you're one of the people who watch for the sole purpose of seeing what they wore, either way...

I may be on a bandwagon with this, but I ~~love~~ Lady Gaga. She is, as my friend said, a catalyst. She gets people talking. I know that gal is as crazy as crazy gets but something about her keeps me entranced. I wait to see what she's going to do next. The Grammy's were no exception. Here is what I appreciate most about her: She is 100% original. She has a team of designers who help her create her imagination's dreams. There are no limits to what she'll do. She is least of all concerned with what people think of her. It's a lesson I am trying to learn. You go, Gaga! Plus, as delusional as she sounds at times, I can appreciate when she says she wants to "create a place of acceptance for all the weirdos out there"... sometimes I feel like a weirdo but I don't care as much as I used to about that. Lady Gaga also says, "Be good to your parents." It's a nice thing. Fashion? No. Being true to your values and yourself? Definitely!

On to the next performance... Pink!

So, apparently, she performed somewhere else in a nude bodysuit. I musta missed that. Either way, what made her performance intriguing was not just that she performed in a body suit with bedazzled 'personal areas'. To appreciate what was going on... I had to look past the awkwardness. Pink! did cirque-de-soleil type movements while SINGING - [NOT lipsynching]and having water poured over her and the co-performers. Sounds crazy, but it was so beautifully captivating. Also, the song she sang was such an emotion-evoking song. So... again you ask, "Fashion?" my reply is: Not necessarily fashion but it was more about personal style. She had to learn something new to be able to perform the way she did. Learning new things is part of growth. She exposed herself physically and emotionally. She left herself open. By no means am I saying to go around in extremely revealing clothing. Modest is hottest! ;o) My point is, allowing non-traditional beauty can be a good thing. Beauty in people's uniqueness. Beauty in finding God doesn't fit in a box. Yeah, I made Pink's performance about God...

God is massively creative. I am so thankful for the uniqueness He's blessed me with. Being afraid of the way God made you... well, let it go. Do your own thing and be concerned with what God thinks of you instead of what other people think. Really, I'd rather Him be proud of me for being myself than being what someone else thinks I ought to be.

Fashionably late...

It seems like it's been forever since I've shopped for the sake of shopping... I need to make a mall run soon. Even a thrift junket would be fruitful at this point... The beatiful snow needs to evaporate, melt, disappear, [insert synonym here]. Plus, being ill hasn't really given me much motivation to shop. Anyway, here are my recent thoughts:

*said in a high pitched emphatic voice*
Why?! Really? Reeeeallly?! There are some trends no matter how "popular" , "trendy" or "comfortable" they are I can not jump on board with. I have to remain true to myself and my sense of what is cute. For the love of pete!!!

For example all the Hollywood starlets jumped on board the bootie train... and quickly I might add! Those blasted eye-sores were wearing on me and grating on me for months before I finally decided a select few of those could be considered semi-cute. Once I finally got a pair they hurt my feet like a mug! Still cute but not worth the pain!

Another item I can't quite fall in love with is those harem pants. I think to rock the look you have to either a) be very thin or b) extremely tall... Some people can pull it off, but I really can't bring myself too it. Plus, good news for me, it looks like those may not have caught on.

I know, I know, I KNOW there are lots of people who really enjoy a certain brand/style of shoes out there. I am thinking of 2 specific types of shoes... I've decided for the sake of certain friendships these shoes will remain nameless. I will describe them for you as follows:

-Let me tell you, the first ones just won't die! They are freaking ev-uh-ree where! Knock-offs are in abundance. For crying out loud, you can purchase these monstrosities anywhere from "shi-shi" stores in the mall to your local grocery store. No lie. They're everywhere and everyone who wears them claim they're the 'most comfortable' shoes. Let me say this; nearly all my shoes are comfortable AND fashionable. That's all about those.
- The second shoes: Well, they're much better to look at than the first and there aren't nearly as many knockoffs to my knowledge. I just don't like them. They are named after some guy and their website claims the shoes to be semi-ecologically friendly. So kudos to them! Either way, their shapeless canvas and flat sole CAN'T possibly be good for foot health.

So here's my point:
I choose to be "fashionably late" to trends I don't agree with. If you've read this far...I probably sound like I just vented a bunch. I probably did. Be true to yourself. If you like booties, harem pants, and figured out which shoes I'm talking about...stay true to yourself and don't let this fashionista change your mind.

Zebra Print

I sho' nuff loooove me some zebra print! Okay, but seriously...I really DO love zebra print. Those of you who like zebra print and are feeling a little adventurous with fingernail polish...read on!

I was in a mighty silly mood...so mostly, the pictures are to show the nails. If it makes you giggle a little...SCORE!

These are some adorably cute shoes! I used to hate high-tops but now they're starting to grow on me. These are part of a new line from Adidas....I especially love the wing on the side. It gives these shoes a very retro 70's feel. It sort of reminds me of roller disco. :o)

I need to branch out...

So...I learned something today. By no means am I an 'expert' on fashion. Here is where taking advice is left up to the listener. Yes...I am sharing what I 'think' I know. Naturally, if someone asks "Where do you shop?" or "Where do you get your cute clothes?" I am going to answer with where I shop. (I'm still getting to the thing I learned...)

I personally shop LOTS of places.
*I do the bulk of my shopping these first four places.
- Consignment stores (Second Chance, Second Time's a Charm, DeJa Vu Designer Consigner, etc.)
- Thrift Stores (Bargain Thrift, Value Thrift, Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc.)
- Garage/Yard Sales
- Forever 21

* I generally feel like I'm getting really fancy if I get something from these places. Ha.
- Target
- Ann Taylor the Loft (sale racks only for me...and this store makes me feel like a 'grown-up')
- Gap (rarely)
- JC Penny's

Okay, so back to my lesson:
Last school year, someone older than me asked those aforementioned questions and I told her where I shop and she went there and tried to do the same thing I do. She was telling me about her adventure today and she said the following:
"When I looked at myself in the mirror I thought 2 things. Well, this makes me look like a sausage and I look like one of those old women you want to grab by the arm and tell her, 'You are NOT a teeny-bopper anymore!'"

Shoot, Jana Faith! *sigh* I know fashion changes according to the age bracket you're in. That's why there are magazine articles about how to 'rock the trends' no matter what age you are. So ladies, I am going to try and branch out and share what I know for various age groups. :o)

Okay ladies.... I have a tip.

I never seem to have enough undershirts, camisoles, or solid white t's. At Forever 21, Charlotte Russe, Gap, a.k.a. "the mall" you can get cute little shirts for $5 - $10. BUT STOPPPP! That's too much! Someone very thrifty recently let me in on a secret: you can get plain white hemmed undershirts and plain white v-neck and round neck tee-shirts in the mens undergarments section.

TA DA!

I just bought 6 v-neck shirts for $9.50 and 3 'wifebeater' shirts for $7.50. I have come up with all kinds of fun ways to wear these. I highly recommend the purchase. Plus, since they're in the men's section of the store, no worries abouts sizes b/c I know Wal-Mart sells up to a 3X in men's.

Have fun with your new white shirts. Plus, if you're not feelin' the white shirts...you can dye them any color you choose. :oD

Have you ever seen an outfit on someone and thought to yourself, "Man, I wish I could do that..."? Good news, people! You CAN!

I get my fashion inspirations from that exact thing...
I am a people watcher and I'm always eye-balling what people are wearing. I take it in: head to toe, so if you ever see me 'creepin'...I'm just admiring your outfit. :o)

For example, several years ago, at least 5, I saw a girl named Sam who wore a simple solid t-shirt with a scarf tied around her shirt as a shirt. I know, this tip won't work for everyone...it usually works for the more 'narrow' people out there. (scarf-shirt picture at the end) My point is fashion is all over the place!

It drives me crazy to hear someone say "Oh, I couldn't pull that off". Here's my question to you: Have you tried?!

I encourage you to: Be bold! Be brave! Be courageous! Think outside that blasted box!

With the support of 7 facebook friends...I'm venturing into the world of blogging about fashion. I'm not entirely sure where this will take us but as I was sifting through the racks at one of my favorite consignment stores tonight... I thought those same things to myself I always think:

1. Know your fabrics.
- this means... you can tell by looking at the sleeves whether or not the whole shirt is worth a look. If the sleeves are stupid (i.e. peely, balled up, wrinkly, stained) skip it!

2. Know your colors.
- this means... there are some colors that just are not flattering on people. For example, I can't wear khaki near my face. It washes me out. Also, lots of yellows look stupid on me. If you're not sure whether a color is good on you, bring an honest friend. She might tick you off, but at least she's telling the truth.

3. Flip through quickly.
- this means... flip, flip, flip, flip, SKIM through the clothes for the sake of time.

4. Knowing your size often doesn't do a bit of good. I'm serious, people. I have pants in a variety of sizes and shirts that range from a small to a large, which leads to my next point.

5. Be willing to try everything on and put things back.

lastly...
6. If you're not in love with it...don't waste the money. Even if it is a "good buy. " If you're not in love with it you won't wear it.
