How putting on a "costume" changed my attitude

As of today, school officially starts in seven sleeps. And without fail, my back-to-school jitters are kicking in. By nature I'm a bit of a worrier and this year is no exception. Each year I get jitters just like my first grade darlings and it's to be expected after a summer of carefree fun and fashion. The way I dress in summer and the way I dress during the school year... I feel like I'm not the same lady and the clothes come from a costume closet.

Here's an interesting tidbit about me...Some days I have to put on a teacher 'costume'.  My college professors were worried I wouldn't speak loudly enough and I would struggle with management. But I found a trick... if I dress like a teacher, I act like a teacher.

My first year of teaching was less than ideal. In fact, I struggled with classroom management (aka student behavior).  One little tweak in my wardrobe helped change my attitude. Instead of wearing whatever fun clothes I wanted, I began dressing professionally. I immediately noticed a positive change in my behavior and my students' behavior. Although many early childhood teachers advise against dressing up my philosophy is: clothes are washable.

(Also, do not judge the clothes on the floor behind me. I like to keep it real, people)

I usually start the year off strong and always dress professionally for conferences, meet the teacher, and anything dealing with parents. Throughout the year, I integrate my fun clothes but much like Miss Nelson from Miss Nelson is Missing... I have my alter-ego for when my darlings get out of hand. Shhhhh.... help me keep it a secret. Otherwise this trick may lose its magic.

For now, my teacher clothes are still in the closet... So enjoy some summertime Jana. I like her wardrobe more than Mrs. C's.

Little classroom management tools.... to hopefully make my life easier. Plus- gives you a glimpse into my classroom. Got to spend my first full day with my darlings

I've seen several versions of this on Pinterest but I did my own tweaking and came up with this. I think it's pretty cute.

Apple for the teacher - DIY

I'm a sucker for all things apple - aka all things teacher. Silly thing is... I'm not a real big fan of eating apples but I sure think they're cute. Super kawaii - means super cute in Japanese!

Recently, I saw another blogger wearing a cute apple pin. I began my search in thrift stores and realized, "Hey, I'm crafty. I'll make one!" And thus, the following tutorial.

AppleBroochSupplies
  1. Foam Sheets - purchased at the Dollar Tree
  2. Craft box - with pin backs  - you can get some here
  3. E 600 Glue - it's amazing - get it here
  4. Multi colored felt - I got mine in the craft section of Wal-Mart
  5. Fabric Scissors

First, I googled "cute apple". I already had an idea in my mind - sorta but I needed some inspiration. So - that being said, I cut out the following shape.
  6. 002-11
I knew I wanted my apple to have a face. So I cut tiny black circles for eyes and a thin curve of black felt for a smile. I cut tiny pink circles for rosy cheeks, cause fruits have faces, doncha know? Lastly, I cut out a brown stem. That's what our first grade teachers taught us is right. ;o)
    003-14
Something about his shape is wonky... he needs a little fixin'.
    004-15

Add an "apple bottom" divot and a leaf. Glue this little cutie to some white craft foam to stabilize.

    Glue your pin back
    005-15
     wah-lah! ta-da! twinkle! and other sparkle-tastic sounds!
    006-17

Isn't he so stinkin' cute?! I pretty much love it... I can wear it on my teachery cardigans. I can attach it to to a headband. I can also wear it as a hair accessory like this cool lady did!

    What do you think?

    Teaching on Tuesdays

    Here's week two's projects

    Teacher Drop Box
I made this out of a cereal box I cut down and Mod Podged with scrapbook paper. I reinforced the bottom with clear tape before and the thickened the outside with a thin extra layer of cardboard. My big plan is to put it either right inside the classroom door or attach it to my desk.  I'm leaning towards near my desk because that will help with a.m. traffic flow. Anyway, its purpose is for students to put any notes, $$$, forms, whatever in that box that way they don't pester me about it. :o)

    Box Tops Box
I had this clear box in my classroom already but it was BORING! So, again with the Mod Podge. I attacked that puppy. Yep. Now it's cute and my kids will know to put their Box Tops in there because there's already a big ol' honkin' one on top! Yay-yah!

If you know me well at all, you know themes drive me nuts. Make me feel restricted. Trapped. They're worse than school uniforms. Can't stand it. So - - - my "theme" is black, white, and red. Yep. I'm an "early childhood" teacher who doesn't do themes. Go figure! Easiest thing I've learned about coordinating my room this year - buy a pack of scrapbook paper with different prints but the same color scheme and you can Mod Podge the crap out of stuff. Plus, everyone will think you're clever. ;o) So, buy some Mod Podge and scrapbook paper and GO NUTS! Let me know what you think. I LOVE your feedback.

    Teaching on Tuesdays

Most of you know, outside the blog world, I'm a first grade teacher.

Today is my first tip - and I'm proud to say, this is my own original idea. I've not seen anyone else use this. Also, you're about to learn a little about my personal life. Ha!

    100_0963

I've been saving these little sleeves for months now. If they look familiar, it's because they're birth control packaging. I know, it's a bit 'hoarder-ish' of me to still have them (and also a bit awkward of me to show them to the whole wide world!) My idea is to use them as portable sight word practice folders. Plus, if you use dry-erase markers on the shiny, see-through portion they can trace over the word or LOTS of other ideas. For now, I have half a class set or enough for students to practice in pairs. Or I could even use these little things during small group instruction.

Do you have some ideas? Please share... Do tell, do tell !  And.... I know, I know, it's a little weird but it's also quite practical. :o) I have more tips to come....
